The only time I tried using Find My Friend was when my daughter ran a race and carried her iPhone. I thought I could use that feature to see when she was near the finish line so I could get in position to photograph her triumphant finish. I quickly found out that updates to the app were significantly behind real-time, so it was useless for this purpose. It may be better today. I haven’t tried again since then.
