It learns these locations from your usage patterns rather than relying only on the home or work address saved in Contacts or Maps.<\/p>\n<p>When you set Stolen Device Protection to <strong><em>Away from Familiar Locations<\/em><\/strong>, your iPhone checks whether it recognizes your current location before you perform a protected action:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 35px;\">\n<li><strong>At a familiar location:<\/strong> You can generally make sensitive account and security changes without a Security Delay.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Away from familiar locations:<\/strong> Stolen Device Protection requires stronger authentication and may delay certain critical changes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>At an unrecognized location:<\/strong> Your iPhone may treat the location as unfamiliar, even if you consider it safe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can\u2019t manually add a familiar location from the Stolen Device Protection screen. Your iPhone identifies these places automatically as it learns where you use the device regularly. Saving an address as &#8220;Home&#8221; or &#8220;Work&#8221; doesn\u2019t guarantee that Stolen Device Protection will immediately recognize it as familiar. If you don\u2019t want Stolen Device Protection to depend on whether your iPhone recognizes your location, select <strong><em>Always<\/em><\/strong> under <strong><em>Require Security Delay<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-bottom: 1em;\">What does Security Delay mean on iPhone?<\/h2>\n<p>Security Delay is a waiting period that prevents someone from immediately changing critical security settings or taking control of your Apple Account. It doesn\u2019t lock your iPhone or stop you from using it. It only postpones the protected action you\u2019re trying to complete.<\/p>\n<p>When Security Delay applies, the process works as follows:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"padding-left: 35px;\">\n<li>Authenticate with <strong>Face ID or Touch ID<\/strong> to start the Security Delay.<\/li>\n<li>Wait approximately one hour.<\/li>\n<li>Authenticate with <strong>Face ID or Touch ID<\/strong> again.<\/li>\n<li>Complete the security or account change.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Security Delay may apply when you try to:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 35px;\">\n<li>Change your Apple Account password.<\/li>\n<li>Sign out of your Apple Account.<\/li>\n<li>Add or remove a trusted device, Recovery Key, or Recovery Contact.<\/li>\n<li>Add or remove Face ID or Touch ID.<\/li>\n<li>Change your iPhone passcode.<\/li>\n<li>Reset all settings.<\/li>\n<li>Enroll the iPhone in mobile device management.<\/li>\n<li>Turn off <strong><em>Stolen Device Protection<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you select <strong><em>Away from Familiar Locations<\/em><\/strong>, Security Delay applies when your iPhone doesn\u2019t recognize your current location. Your iPhone may end the delay early if it detects that you\u2019ve arrived at a familiar place. Normally, a locked app can open with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode. When Stolen Device Protection applies, the app requires Face ID or Touch ID and doesn\u2019t offer the passcode as a fallback.<\/p>\n<p>This helps prevent someone with your passcode from opening locked apps when the extra checks apply. Locking Mail, for example, can help protect private messages, password-reset emails, and verification codes.<\/p>\n<p>When biometric-only access applies depends on your chosen setting:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 35px;\">\n<li><strong><em>Away from Familiar Locations<\/em>:<\/strong> Locked apps require Face ID or Touch ID when your iPhone is away from places it recognizes.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Always<\/em>:<\/strong> Locked apps require Face ID or Touch ID regardless of your location.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stolen Device Protection doesn\u2019t automatically lock your apps. You must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/how-to-lock-and-hide-apps-on-iphone-and-ipad-to-increase-your-privacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">choose which iPhone apps to lock or hide<\/a> from the Home Screen.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"find-or-turn-on\" style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-bottom: 1em; scroll-margin-top: 3em;\">Why can\u2019t you find or turn on Stolen Device Protection?<\/h2>\n<p>If Stolen Device Protection is missing or won\u2019t turn on, check the following:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 35px;\">\n<li><strong>Your iPhone runs an older iOS version:<\/strong> Stolen Device Protection requires iOS 17.3 or later.
