With versions 10.14.4 and 12.2 of these operating systems, respectively, the Do Not Track feature will no longer be available.<\/p>\n<p>Introduced to Safari in 2014 (and having been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/mozilla-proposes-do-not-track-browser-packet-headers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed as a standard<\/a> as early as 2011; see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/topic\/do-not-track\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our past stories about DNT<\/a>), Apple&#8217;s implementation of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-gb\/guide\/safari\/prevent-websites-from-tracking-you-sfri40732\/mac\">Do Not Track<\/a> told websites that you didn&#8217;t want to be tracked or have your web browsing\u00a0followed\u00a0across multiple sites. As Apple noted, however, &#8220;it\u2019s up to the website to honor this request.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-85690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/privacy-prefs.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1772\" height=\"786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/privacy-prefs.png 1772w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/privacy-prefs-150x67.png 150w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/privacy-prefs-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/privacy-prefs-768x341.png 768w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/privacy-prefs-1024x454.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/privacy-prefs-657x291.png 657w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1772px) 100vw, 1772px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since then, Do Not Track has proved to be essentially useless, as <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/do-not-track-the-privacy-tool-used-by-millions-of-peop-1828868324\">most websites simply ignore it<\/a>. And, the existence of this feature can help trackers create a fingerprint of your web browser. This <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Device_fingerprint\">fingerprinting<\/a> uses a number of variables in your browser and operating system to create what can be a unique profile capable of identifying you.<\/p>\n<p>You can test this on the website <a href=\"https:\/\/amiunique.org\">Am I Unique?<\/a> It looks at a set of data provided to websites by your browser, including which app you use, which operating system and version, the language of your operating system, your time zone, screen resolution, which plugins you have installed, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Apple claims that its Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP), which it launched in 2017, is more efficient than Do Not Track, which has always been optional.
