Twitter has just joined the crowd (including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/apple-now-allows-two-factor-authentication\/\">Apple<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wordpress-offers-two-factor-authentication\/\">WordPress<\/a> most recently) that has recently added the option for people to put a second verification step on their accounts. You can find this option on your <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/settings\/account\">settings page <\/a>if it&#8217;s available to you, as this seems to be a gradual roll-out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/TwitterSecurity.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14511\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" alt=\"TwitterSecurity\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/TwitterSecurity.png\" width=\"464\" height=\"65\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/TwitterSecurity.png 464w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/TwitterSecurity-150x21.png 150w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/TwitterSecurity-300x42.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a couple potential problems with Twitter&#8217;s implementation, as it currently stands, due to one simple rule:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>One phone for one account<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have multiple accounts and only one phone to associate with it, you&#8217;ll have to pick which account you wish to secure with additional authentication. Likewise, if you have a business account that&#8217;s used by multiple people, only one person with one phone number can perform the authentication.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/TwitterRetry.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14513\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" alt=\"TwitterRetry\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/TwitterRetry.png\" width=\"399\" height=\"64\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/TwitterRetry.png 399w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/TwitterRetry-150x24.png 150w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/TwitterRetry-300x48.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So as far as it goes, this is a very limited implementation of two-step authentication. While it&#8217;s certainly better than nothing, this is likely to help a fairly small percentage of Twitter&#8217;s user base. With these limitations, the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/allthingsd.com\/20130522\/after-months-of-hacks-twitter-launches-heightened-security-features\/\">high-profile Twitter account hacks of news outlets and businesses<\/a> would not likely have been prevented with this additional security.
