If your Mac is running slowly or showing a memory warning, you may be looking for a cleanup app or command-line trick to clear RAM. You don\u2019t need either. macOS manages RAM automatically, and forcing it to clear memory can reduce performance instead of improving it.<\/p>\n

A good first step is to look at Memory Pressure in Activity Monitor. It tells you whether your Mac is struggling, rather than just how much memory is currently in use.<\/p>\n

If the Memory Pressure graph is yellow or red, close unused apps and browser tabs or restart your Mac after saving your work. If the graph is green, RAM is unlikely to be causing the slowdown, so check for other possible causes.<\/div>\n

RAM is your Mac\u2019s working memory, the temporary space it uses to keep open apps and active files running well. Below, we’ll walk through how to check whether RAM is really the problem and how to clear RAM on Mac safely when it is. You\u2019ll also learn how to keep memory pressure from building back up.<\/p>\n

Check whether your Mac is really running low on RAM<\/h2>\n

Before trying to clear RAM, open Activity Monitor and check whether memory pressure is causing the slowdown. In the Memory tab, the Memory Pressure graph<\/a> shows whether your Mac is using memory efficiently.   1. Open the Finder<\/strong> app.<\/li>\n
  2. Go to Applications > Utilities<\/em><\/strong> and open the Activity Monitor<\/strong> app. You can also press Command<\/strong> + Space bar<\/strong> to open Spotlight<\/strong>, then type Activity Monitor<\/strong>, and press Return<\/strong>.
