In these updates, Apple fixed two zero-day vulnerabilities\u2014security flaws that have been actively exploited in the wild.<\/p>\n<p>We recommend prioritizing installing these updates. Here&#8217;s everything you should know about the security flaws that Apple addressed.<\/p>\n<p><em>In this article:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#sequoia\">What Apple patched<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#details\">Details have been exposed to the public<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#howinstall\">How to install Apple security updates<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#learnmore\">How can I learn more?<\/a><a name=\"sequoia\"><\/a><a name=\"18\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What Apple patched<\/h3>\n<p><strong>New OS updates: <\/strong>macOS Sequoia 15.4.1; iOS 18.4.1; iPadOS 18.4.1; visionOS 2.4.1; tvOS 18.4.1<\/p>\n<p><strong>Available for: <\/strong>All supported Macs capable of running macOS Sequoia; iPhone XS and later; iPad Pro 13-inch, iPad Pro 13.9-inch 3rd generation and later, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 7th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later; Apple Vision Pro; Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K (all models)<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"gb-header\"><strong>CoreAudio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gb-header\">Impact: Processing an audio stream in a maliciously crafted media file may result in code execution. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on iOS.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Description: A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved bounds checking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gb-header\">CVE-2025-31200: Apple and Google Threat Analysis Group<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gb-header\"><strong>RPAC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gb-header\">Impact: An attacker with arbitrary read and write capability may be able to bypass Pointer Authentication.\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on iOS.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gb-header\">Description: This issue was addressed by removing the vulnerable code.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gb-header\">CVE-2025-31201: Apple<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>See the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/100100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple security releases page<\/a> for links to these details. We recommend updating sooner rather than later.<a name=\"details\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Details have been exposed to the public<\/h3>\n<p>On April 20, four days after Apple released its patches, a research group <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.epsilon-sec.com\/cve-2025-31201-rpac.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published technical details<\/a> about one of the vulnerabilities. The researchers discovered what Apple patched by using a technique called reverse engineering; they compared the iOS 18.4 update with the iOS 18.4.1 update to analyze the differences, and worked from there.<\/p>\n<p>While it might seem like the research group did something irresponsible by publishing these details, consider that <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/theJoshMeister\/status\/1914166743725183241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anyone can do the same reverse engineering\u2014including the bad guys<\/a>. And, of course, threat actors will keep the details secret and use it for unethical purposes, to hack users who haven&#8217;t yet patched their operating systems.<\/p>\n<p>This serves as a good reminder of the importance of staying on the very latest Apple operating systems. It also demonstrates why it&#8217;s crucial to avoid waiting to upgrade.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Why should you stay on the very latest Apple OS? (Bad guys do this, too.)<\/p>\n<p>Right now, everyone who\u2019s still on iOS\/iPadOS 18.4, macOS Sequoia 15.4, or *any* older version is endangering their security. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iV5QZvqeeQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/iV5QZvqeeQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Josh Long (the\u00a0JoshMeister) (@theJoshMeister) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/theJoshMeister\/status\/1914166743725183241?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 21, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"howinstall\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>How to install Apple security updates<\/h3>\n<h4><strong>For macOS updates<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>You can get this update by going to <strong>Apple menu<\/strong> &gt;\u00a0<strong>System Settings\u2026<\/strong> &gt; <strong>General<\/strong> &gt;\u00a0<strong>Software Update<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any trouble getting the macOS update to show up, either press \u2318R at the Software Update screen, or type in the Terminal <code>softwareupdate -l<\/code> (that\u2019s a lowercase L) and press Return\/Enter, then check System Settings &gt; General &gt; Software Update again.<\/p>\n<p>Note that <strong>Apple only fully patches the latest macOS version\u2014currently, that&#8217;s macOS Sequoia<\/strong>; older macOS versions only get a subsection of those patches and remain vulnerable. Therefore, staying on the latest macOS version is critically important for maintaining your security and privacy. For example, run Intego&#8217;s NetUpdate utility and install all available updates, and then check for updates for all other software that you use regularly. Next, if your Mac is running <strong>macOS Ventura (13.x) or newer<\/strong>, check for macOS updates by going to Apple menu &gt; System Settings\u2026 &gt; General &gt; Software Update. If your Mac is running <strong>macOS Mojave (10.14.x) through macOS Monterey (12.x)<\/strong>, you&#8217;ll instead go to Apple menu &gt;\u00a0System Preferences\u2026 &gt;\u00a0Software Update. If your Mac is running <strong>macOS High Sierra (10.13.x)<\/strong>, you&#8217;ll need to look for <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/macos-sequoia\/id6596773750\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">macOS Sequoia in the App Store<\/a> and download it from there.<\/p>\n<p>If your Mac is not on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/macos\/macos-sequoia\/#:~:text=macOS%20Sequoia%20is%20compatible%20with%20these%20devices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple&#8217;s compatibility list for macOS Sequoia<\/a>, you should consider buying a new Mac; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/how-to-choose-the-right-mac-for-your-use-case\/\">learn which one is ideal for you<\/a>. Or, if you like living on the edge, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/how-to-keep-older-macs-secure-a-geeky-approach\/\">upgrade your old Mac to macOS Sequoia without Apple&#8217;s support or blessing<\/a>; many Macs from 2008 or later can be upgraded through the unofficial method.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>For iOS and iPadOS updates<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Users of <strong>iPhone or iPad<\/strong> can open the <strong>Settings<\/strong> app and choose <strong>General<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Software Update<\/strong> to update iOS or iPadOS on their devices. (Apple calls this an &#8220;over the air&#8221; or OTA update.) Alternatively, you can connect your device to your Mac, click on the device name in a Finder window sidebar, and check for updates there; or, if you use a Windows PC, you can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.microsoft.com\/detail\/9np83lwlpz9k?hl=en-us&amp;gl=US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple Devices app<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>It&#8217;s wise to back up before updating<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Whenever you&#8217;re preparing to update macOS, iOS, or iPadOS, it&#8217;s a good idea to always <strong>back up your data<\/strong> before installing any updates. This gives you a restore point if something does not go as planned.
