| Q. |
What is a firewall? |
| A. |
Connecting
your Macintosh to the Internet gives millions of people direct,
uncontrolled access to your hard drive and data. If you do not protect
your Macintosh from unwanted intrusions, you are vulnerable to an
attack. A firewall provides secure technology that regulates both
incoming and outgoing communications. NetBarrier is a personal firewall,
which means that it protects and monitors all incoming and outgoing
data on your computer. |
| Q. |
What is a port? |
| A. |
A
port allows data to enter and exit a computer. Some ports are specific
while others are general.
A
port is a "virtual slot'' in your TCP and UDP stack that is
used to map a connection between two hosts, and also between the
TCP/UDP layer and the actual applications running on the hosts.
They
are numbered 0-65535, with the range 0-1023 being marked as "reserved''
or "privlileged'', and the rest (1024-65535) as "dynamic''
or "unprivileged''.
|
| Q. |
What is a ping? |
| A. |
There
are two types of pings. One is sent automatically by the server
and the other is sent manually by a user.
Servers
use the ping command to check if a connection is still active.
A
ping sent by a user tells how long the signal took to go from the
user's computer to the pinged computer.
|
| Q. |
What is the ping of death? |
| A. |
The
ping of death relies on a flaw in some TCP/IP stacks when handling
unusually and illegally large ping packets. |

| Q. |
Can I run NetBarrier on older Macintoshes such as Quadras or 68K platforms? |
| A. |
No,
the program has been optimized for the PowerPC processor family, and
cannot run on older 68K processors even if MacOS 8.1 is installed
on the computer. |
| Q. |
I
downloaded my software and now have a .sit file on my desktop. What
do I do with it? |
| A. |
The
file that you downloaded from the Intego web-site appears on your
desktop with a .sit extension. This is a file that was compacted
with StuffIt from Aladdin Systems Inc. You need to have StuffIt
Expander to open it. If you don't have StuffIt Expander, you can
obtain it from Aladdin Systems at http://www.aladdinsys.com/
See
the following question if you need help installing your software.
|
| Q. |
How do I install NetBarrier? |
| A. |
NetBarrier
installation is explained in the first chapter of the user manual.
You may download the manual in PDF format here.
There is also a how-to document in PDF format available at http://www.intego.com/services/faq.asp |
| Q. |
How
do I open the NetBarrier manual? |
| A. |
Our
user manuals and how-to documents are in PDF format. They have been
written and optimized for Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 and up.
If
you are unable to open the file, it is probably because your version
of Adobe Acrobat Reader is earlier than 3.0. You can download the
latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader at :
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html
|
| Q. |
I crashed my hard drive. How can I reinstall my download version? |
| A. |
You
need to send your serial number to our support team at support@intego.com.
They will send you a link to download your copy again. |
| Q. |
I've just finished installing and registering online my copy of NetBarrier.
However, the registration box keeps popping back up and won't let
me configure the firewall. What do I do now? |
| A. |
This
occurs when the serial number has not been entered or has been entered
incorrectly. The serial number is a group of digits and/or letters
and is located on the CD jewel case for CD-Rom versions or in your
confirmation e-mail for download versions. If you have downloaded
your program and cannot find your confirmation e-mail, contact our
technical support at support@intego.com
to have it sent to you. |
| Q. |
How do I find my version number? |
| A. |
-
Open NetBarrier, select the About NetBarrier... menu item in the
Apple menu.
-
The name of the product followed by its version number appears on
the first line.

|
| Q. |
How do I increase NetBarrier's memory? |
| A. |
Open
the NetBarrier control panel, select its icon and choose in the
file menu the Get Info option. There is a pop up menu next
to "Show".
Select
the memory option. When the memory requirements window opens (see
below), select "preferred size" and increase the memory
by 1000 K or 2000 K. NetBarrier does not require too much memory.

|
| Q. |
Does the NetBarrier updater also update my NetUpdate program? |
| A. |
No,
NetUpdate is a separate application that updates all Intego products.
See
the next question for further information on how
to install or replace NetUpdate.
|
| Q. |
I keep getting a message that NetUpdate is not installed or that it
needs to be updated. |
| A. |
Netupdate
is an application developed by Intego to help our customers to update
their software without having to search for links or files on the
web.
If
you cannot download NetUpdate by the application located in the
menu, you can replace your old version of NetUpdate with the full
install application available for download at:
http://www.intego.com/services/updates.asp
Just
download the file and uncompress it with Stuffit Expander. The icon
should appear on your desktop.
-
Double-click on the icon and you will be asked to proceed to the
installation.
-
Once you have read the license and you agree to its terms, click
on continue and the installation will start.
-
After the installation, you will be asked to restart your computer.
All older components are automatically replaced after startup.
You
can now use your new version of NetUpdate, and download updates
for your Intego products.
|
| Q. |
I cannot tell the
difference between " "I", "l"
or "1" in my serial number. (This applies to versions earlier
than 2.0) |
| A. |
If
you are unable to distinguish the difference, you will have to try
them all, one by one. If the OK button does not highlight, you have
not entered the correct character. |

| Q. |
Do I need a personal firewall if I'm protected by my company's firewall? |
| A. |
Firewalls
are used for two purposes.
-
to keep people (worms / crackers) out.
-
to keep people (employees / children) in.
Your
company's firewall protects the company's computers from the outside.
NetBarrier is a personal firewall that protects your own computer
from all dangers, even those from fellow users on your network who
are on the same side of the company firewall as you.
If
you want to protect your computer against people who are also behind
your company's firewall, monitor incoming and outgoing data, use
NetBarrier data filtering functions to secure some specific part
of your hard drive, or use the banner filter while surfing on the
Net, you can use this firewall even if your company has a firewall
on its server.
|
| Q. |
Does NetBarrier provide parental control? |
| A. |
No,
it does not. Intego has a content filtering program that provides
parental control named ContentBarrier. For further details you
can consult our web-site :

Does
NetBarrier protect me when I shop on the Internet? |
| A. |
If
you have configured the data filter option to protect sensitive
information, such as your credit card number, you are protected
while shopping on the Internet. You must configure this information
for the data filter to work.
As
an added precaution, make sure the web-site you are ordering on
is also secured.

| Q. |
Is
NetBarrier compatible with anti-virus programs such as VirusBarrier,
Virex, or Norton Anti-Virus? |
| A. |
Yes,
NetBarrier has been tested on different machines with different anti-virus
solutions. No compatibility problems have been detected. If you want
to be really sure of compatibility, especially for future product
updates, Intego's VirusBarrier
is the ideal anti-virus complement to NetBarrier. |
| Q. |
Is NetBarrier compatible with programs such as IPNetRouter or Surf
Doubler? |
| A. |
While
NetBarrier is a personal firewall solution, you can still use it with
a Macintosh running IPNetRouter, but only the computer running NetBarrier

activity, network activity and Appletalk.
|
| Q. |
The NetBarrier
warning window appears with the message: "Application
corrupted". |

Please
check that you have the following items in the corresponding folders:
- NetBarrier
in the Control Panel folder
- NetBarrier
CSM in the Control Strip Modules folder

Lib and NetBarrier Extension in the Extensions folder.
You
may also want to check if the version for each of these items is
the same. You can do this by using the Get Info command in the Finder
menu after having selected the appropriate items.
If
you have both 1.x and 2.x components, these may cause some conflicts.
If
you the above items are in their corresponding folders and all
items are the same version, and you still receive the "Application
corrupted" message, contact our support team at support@intego.com.
